Basic Colors Guide: Tones, Tints, Shades, and More

We often hear terms like tones, shades, pastels, palette, hues,.. when discussing colors, but we may not always be familiar with them. Here, you’ll get to know these terms. Colors are fascinating! There’s a whole world of color terminology—like primary, secondary, neutral, warm, cool, hues, and tones—that can help us pair outfits, decorate spaces, and create a unique look. By understanding these basics, we can style ourselves or our surroundings in ways that feel balanced and visually appealing

Primary Colors

Red, blue, and yellow are primary colors, and they form the foundation of all the colors we see. These colors are not created by mixing other colors. Instead, they combine to create secondary colors, and further mixing results in tertiary colors and Secondary.

Secondary colors come next after the primary colors and are formed by mixing two primary colors.

    • Red + Yellow = Orange

    • Blue + Yellow = Green

    • Red + Blue = Purple

Achromatic

Achromatic colors, as the name suggests, are colors without hue. These include our timeless favorites: black, white, and their combination, grey

When white is added to basic colors, it results in lighter versions of those colors. These are called pastels, soft shades, or tints
 

Shades

When black is added to basic colors, it results in darker  versions of those colors. These are called Shades
